About the museum
The Pabellón de la Navegación is a building on the Isla de la Cartuja in Seville, built for the 1992 Universal Exposition to a design by the architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. During the Expo it was devoted to scientific expeditions, discoveries and naval technology, and it recreated the interior of a ship of Columbus’s era. Its structure rests on large curved timber beams, and next to the quay rises a viewing tower of about 60 metres.
After the Expo, its permanent contents remained until 1998, after which the building was used mainly for events. It reopened as a museum on 2 January 2012 with a permanent exhibition on the history of Atlantic navigation, with a sound and light room dedicated to the ocean, a mural with restored models of Expo ships, an interactive room on life on board and touch screens on the history of Seville and the Guadalquivir.
In June 2026 the Junta de Andalucía, the owner of the building, provisionally suspended its activity. The official website indicates that the permanent exhibition has ended its cycle, that the building is not open to the public and that a new activity model is being defined.
