About the museum

The pavilion, six by six meters, was built by the mail-order company Åhlén & Holm from Insjön for the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in 1914. Inside was a miniature of the company’s large facility in Åhlbyn, staffed by dolls 15–20 centimeters tall that showed how the work was done. According to an internal company history of Åhléns, 200,000 visitors came to the pavilion during the summer.

After the exhibition the pavilion was moved to Insjön, where in the 20th century it was used, among other things, as a playhouse, a meeting place for young people and a carton store for a tie factory. It was moved in 1988–1989 to its present location at Hjultorget and has since been a museum run by Åhls Local Heritage Association.

At first the museum was purely a museum of Åhlén & Holm. Since 2012 the exhibition has been called Det företagsamma Insjön and reflects a century of intensive entrepreneurship in the community, with a focus on, among others, Åhléns, Clas Ohlson and Bergkvist/Insjön. The museum also sells books and hiking maps of the Åhlskogarna area.
