About the museum
The homestead museum goes back to Jones Mats Persson Källberget, who in 1899 opened an ethnographic museum in Lisselby in Leksand, inspired by a visit to Skansen. It became one of Sweden's very first homestead museums. Leksand municipality bought the museum in 1914, and it was moved in 1937–1938 to Åkerösidan by the old ferry landing and in 1963–1965 to its present site on arable land by Kyrkallén near the church.
Today the complex comprises around 25 buildings. Among them are a double storehouse (dubbelbod) from 1516 from Laknäs, a loft storehouse (loftbod) from the 1580s from Björken, Jonesstugan from the 1750s, where the museum opened in 1899, a stolphärbre (storehouse on posts) from the 16th century and a boathouse with three church boats.
