About the museum
Hildasholm was built in 1910–1911 to designs by Torben Grut as a manor-like villa by Lake Siljan in Leksand. The doctor and author Axel Munthe had the house built as a wedding present for his wife Hilda Pennington-Mellor Munthe. The house was first called Stengården and was given the name Hildasholm after Hilda’s death in 1967.
In 1980 the couple’s son Malcolm Munthe donated the estate to the newly formed Stiftelsen Hildasholm (the Hildasholm Foundation). The foundation was formed by Axel and Hilda’s descendants together with the Zorn collections (Zornsamlingarna), Leksand municipality and Leksand parish. The house became a listed building in 1988 and underwent extensive restoration in 1994–1999.
Hilda Munthe laid out the garden when the house was new, and large parts of it survive. On the south side are flower plantings inspired by England and France, and on the north side clipped spruces in various shapes. In 2004 a traditional Swedish kitchen garden from the 1920s and 1930s and a medicinal herb garden in the spirit of Axel Munthe were added. The foundation’s task is to preserve the estate as a cultural-historical memorial and keep it open to visitors.
