About the museum

Gagnefs Minnesstuga is the oldest homestead museum (hembygdsgård) in Dalarna. The initiative for an old farmstead was taken by the artist and writer Ottilia Adelborg, who settled in Gagnef in 1903. Between 1904 and 1906 she and her friends collected money and objects, and in 1909 the farm was handed over to the people of the district by a deed of gift. The donors were Ottilia Adelborg, the sisters Anna and Lotten Falk, and Clara Wahlström.

The Minnesstuga today consists of 22 buildings from 1580 onward, including a parstuga (double house), several härbren (storehouses), stables, a cattle barn, a skvaltkvarn (simple water-powered mill) with a flume and dam, a smithy, a sauna, a bokstuga (traditional small building) that is now a shoemaker's workshop, a fäbodstuga (summer pasture cabin) and a fäbodlada (summer pasture barn). The oldest building is a parhärbre (double storehouse) from Blixtgården in Gagnefsbyn, dating from the 1590s. Some houses are furnished as a home from the late 1800s. The site lies beautifully, with views of the flottbron (log-floating bridge), the Österdalälven river and the church.

The farm is run by Stiftelsen Gagnefs Minnesstuga (Gagnefs Minnesstuga Foundation), which also manages the museum's collection of about 4,000 objects and is responsible for the Skolmuseet i Djurmo (Djurmo School Museum). The collections are shown, among other places, in the Ottilia Adelborgmuseet.
