About the museum
Åhus museum is a branch of Regionmuseet Skåne and is located in Åhus's old town hall by the square. The building is first mentioned in writing in 1431 and has partly preserved medieval parts. In the 1920s it was converted into a municipal building, and since 1974 it has been used as a museum.
The exhibition Vid åns mynning (At the Mouth of the River) tells the story of the town, starting from the river Helge å, which for a long time was an important link between the inland and the outside world. Already in the 600s there was a large trading place at the mouth of the river, and archaeological finds such as Arabic silver coins, glass beads and other imported luxury goods show how far-reaching the contacts were.
Åhus had its heyday from the 13th to the 15th century, when the town belonged to the Archdiocese of Lund and to Denmark. The exhibition shows traces of merchants, monks, the archbishop's officials, craftsmen and farmers. The town lost its town charter in 1617, when Kristianstad was founded. In front of the museum stands the Viking Age runestone Älleköpingestenen.
