About the museum
Regionmuseet grew out of a collection of archaeological finds. Christianstads läns fornminnesförening (the Christianstad County Antiquarian Association) was formed in 1877 under the leadership of Abraham Ahlén, and the collection was at first kept in a cupboard. In 1886 the Fornstugan (Antiquities House) was inaugurated, one of Sweden’s first buildings erected specifically for a museum. After the town took over the collections in 1913–1915, they moved to the Tekniska skolan (technical school).
Since June 1959 the museum has been housed in the Tyghuset (the Arsenal), which was built in 1616–1617 as stables for the Danish king Christian IV and later used as a military store. In 1977 the museum became the county museum for Kristianstad County, and in 1988 it was reconstituted as a foundation. After the merger with Landsantikvariekontoret in Lund in 1998 it was called Regionmuseet i Skåne; since 2020 the name Regionmuseet Skåne has been used.
The museum’s activities include the Filmmuseet (Film Museum), Åhus museum, Järnvägsmuseet (Railway Museum) and Kristianstads konsthall, which share the entrance with the main building. The collection has grown from around 3,000 objects at the inauguration in 1886 to a large regional collection, which includes, among other things, the Månsas croft from 1818, donated in 2003.
