About the museum
The Filmmuseet in Kristianstad is located in the building that the film company Svenska Biografteatern had erected in 1908–1909 at Östra Storgatan 53. The house was called Kosmoramahuset and housed both a cinema and a film studio. The cinema Kosmorama opened to the public on 11 March 1909, and the same year the company began shooting feature films in the studio. Between 1909 and 1910, eight feature films and a series of short films with singing pictures were made here, and Värmlänningarne premiered in January 1910.
When the company moved to larger premises on Lidingö, the old studio became the home of a new film museum. It opened on 2 June 1972 with a screening of Järnbäraren, the last film shot in the studio. The museum is now run by Regionmuseet Skåne and works to preserve and show early Swedish film history, with Kristianstad as the starting point, as the cradle of Swedish film production.
In the exhibition, visitors can learn more about early film production in the town and see the well-preserved film studio. In the Intima cinema hall films are shown according to the programme, including silent films and European films, and the house has a café corner.
