About the museum
Åhus hembygdsförening (Åhus local heritage society) was founded in 1951 with a focus on preserving Åhus's old ruins. The society's name, Sankta Annas Gille, is still used, but since 2025 the activity has been called Åhus bygdemuseum (Åhus Local Museum) to show more clearly what the society stands for and works with. The society can now be experienced as a museum.
The heart of it is Anders Håkansgården by road 118 in southern Åhus, a farm with a preserved dwelling wing, a stable and an outbuilding (loge). The farm dates back to the late 17th century and received its present name when the society bought it in 1988. The last tenant, Anders Andersson, lived there until his death in 1990. The buildings have been restored, largely by volunteer members, and now function as a homestead museum.
On the other side of the roundabout is Malmströms repslageri (Malmström's rope-making workshop), which houses a small museum and a rope-walk (repslagerbana), and nearby stands the handsome tobacco barn, which also houses a small museum. The exhibitions show, among other things, the harbour, boat models, coastal fishing, rope-making, music and photography, with large murals by Lars Ferm. The buildings with the collections are open for viewing on summer Thursday afternoons and by arrangement.
