About the museum

Åmåls hembygdsmuseum is run by Åmålsortens hembygdsförening (the Åmål district local heritage society) and is located in an old harbour warehouse from the late 18th century by the harbour in Åmål. The building has three floors with different settings from a time when everything was different, giving visitors a glimpse of how people lived in Åmål about a hundred years ago.

On the ground floor there is, among other things, a tailor's workshop, a shoemaker's, a doctor's and dentist's surgery, a toy room, a confectioner's and an office. The second floor houses a flat with kitchen, bedroom and living room, and there are also lighthouses and other equipment from Vänerns Seglationsstyrelse (the Lake Vänern Navigation Board), as well as pharmacy equipment, boat engines and bicycles. On the third floor there is a general store with hundreds of objects, a clothing room, old fishing gear and folk objects.

The local heritage society also has Snarhögsgården in Örnäsparken with further buildings, and Åmåls industrimuseum, C.W. Thorstensons Mekaniska Verkstad, which can be opened for interested visitors. The museum also hosts lectures and other events during the year.
