About the museum
Åmåls industrimuseum is housed in C.W. Thorstenson’s mechanical workshop, founded in 1918 and largely preserved in the condition it had then. The engineer Carl Wilhelm Thorstenson designed a self-cleaning threshing machine that was built in the workshop, and babbitt metal was also produced there.
The machines are driven by an electric motor via belt transmission in the ceiling, just as in the 1920s. The family lived in a small flat in the same building, and Thorstenson did much of his work in a small office there. The residence and office have been recreated in the style of the early 20th century.
The building was declared a listed building in 1994. The upper floor houses an exhibition on Åmål’s industries from the late 19th century to the present. The museum has no fixed opening hours; visits are arranged with the help of a volunteer from the local history museum.
