About the museum
Åsby farm dates back to the 15th century and came under Trångfors ironworks in 1703. In 1787 the works had a new manor house built here, because the old one stood in the way of the construction of the Strömsholm Canal. The farm museum came into being in the mid-1990s in cooperation between Åsby lantbruk (Åsby farm) and Svedvi-Berg Local Heritage Association, which leases the museum and shows it.
The museum consists of three buildings. The distillery shed (bränneribodan), from the 17th century, shows how spirits were made from grain: from steeping, sprouting and drying to malt crushing, mashing, fermentation and distilling. The drying took place in an oven called Kölnan, which heated a sheet-metal floor. Later there was also a steam distillery on the farm, which was demolished.
The carriage shed, from the 18th century, was originally a grain store and has been moved twice. Inside are carefully restored carriages and sleighs from the time before motoring, among them calèches, wagonettes and show sleighs, fourteen vehicles in total. In the implement sheds from the 18th century, up to 300 old objects from farming and forestry are displayed, and women’s work with milking, laundry, wool and flax processing and weaving is also represented.
