About the museum
Trångfors lies north of Hallstahammar. In the 1620s the merchant Adolf Willemson from Västerås was granted a privilege to start a bar-iron hammer here, but it proved difficult to make the business pay. The hammer was small, the tax to the Bergskollegium (Board of Mines) was heavy, fires caused several blazes, and in the following years many owners had problems with debt.
At the end of the 18th century Trångfors was divided by the Strömsholm Canal. The residential buildings and the forge were demolished and the manor house was moved to Åsby, but a new forge was built on the same site, and a wooden chute from the canal allowed the canal's water to drive the water wheel. In 1875 Lancashire forging was introduced at Trångfors and production rose sharply, peaking at 3,100 tonnes in 1900. The forge closed as early as 1915.
Today one of the forge's four Lancashire hearths has been restored together with the two water wheels and the water chute, and the large mumbling hammer (mumblingshammaren) has been given a new base. Next to the forge is a room with an open fireplace available for hire, and the charcoal house from 1800 lies just beside it. Trångfors's old power station can be visited after booking with Svedvi Berg Local Heritage Society.
