About the museum
Strömsholm lies by the Kolbäcksån river near Lake Mälaren. In the 16th century Gustav Vasa had a castle and a stud farm built on the site, and horse breeding for the Swedish army gave Strömsholm a close connection with horses that persists to this day. The Vasa castle was largely demolished in the 1660s.
The present palace was begun under Dowager Queen Hedvig Eleonora in collaboration with the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. It consists of a central block with four square corner towers and a tall central tower facing the park. The palace chapel, with its interior by Carl Hårleman, was completed in 1741, and the organ from 1743 remains in its original condition.
At the wedding of Gustav III in 1766 the palace was given as a gift to his queen, Sofia Magdalena. The floors were then furnished in Gustavian style under the direction of the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. Later the palace was used, among other things, by the Army Riding School, and a club room for the pupils has been reconstructed. The palace is managed today by Statens fastighetsverk (the Swedish National Property Board) and shown by Kungliga slotten (the Royal Palaces).
