About the museum
The Albatrossmuseet tells the story of the naval battle east of Gotland on 2 July 1915, when the German mine cruiser SMS Albatross was attacked by an overwhelming Russian force and ran aground off the coast of Östergarnslandet. Of the roughly 230 men on board, 27 died during the battle, and 26 of them were buried the same evening in Östergarn churchyard. The survivors were cared for on Gotland and interned in Sweden.
The museum opened on 2 July 1977 in Östergarn’s village hall (bygdegård). Since summer 2021 there has been a new museum in a boathouse in Herrvik harbour, and the association Albatrossmuseet looks after the collections and the memory of the event. Every year on 2 July, Albatross Day is marked with a ceremony at the Albatross stone by the sea and a wreath-laying at the grave in Östergarn churchyard.
The exhibition depicts the ship, the battle and the time the interned German sailors spent on Gotland, where many formed close bonds with the islanders.
