About the museum

Strandridare were customs officials at Gotland's rural harbours. They made sure Visby collected customs duties on goods exported from there, such as timber, limestone and tar. The Strandridaregården in Ljugarn was built by farmers from neighbouring parishes, probably in the 1720s or around 1730, and between 1728 and 1822 nine strandridare with their families lived here.

In 1853 a new customs house was built, replacing the farm as the residence of the customs officials. The customs house closed in 1928 and was converted into a youth hostel in 1966. The Strandridaregården is today the last surviving strandridare farm on Gotland in its original form and was declared a state-protected listed building in 1933.

The Föreningen Ljugarn (Ljugarn association) rents the house from Statens fastighetsverk (Swedish National Property Board) and has kept it open to visitors in summer since 1974. On the lower floor, the home of a strandridare is shown, furnished with help from the collections of Gotlands Museum and based on a probate inventory (bouppteckning) from 1790. On the upper floor is Sweden's only physical customs museum, where visitors can study classic smuggling tricks, among other things, as well as exhibitions about Ljugarn.
