About the museum
Fiskemuseet i Sysne is located in Sysne fishing village on Sysne udd (point) in Gammelgarn parish on Östergarnslandet, Gotland. Sysne is a private fishing harbour that the fishermen built themselves, after state grants to rebuild the old harbour had been refused in the 1950s. In the 1980s about six active fishermen worked from the harbour.
The museum was established by Sysne fiskeriförening (Sysne Fishing Association) in a small shed in the fishing village, near the fish shop. The association has collected many objects, labelled them clearly and described what they are, where they come from and who used them. Among the objects are a mistlur (fog horn) and an old fishing net, as well as many tools whose use hardly anyone knows today.
The museum is small, but it gives a picture of how fishing and everyday life in fishing villages looked over the most recent generations.
