About the museum
Herrviks Motormuseum is run by Herrviks Motorförening (Herrvik Motor Association), which was formed in June 2009 to preserve old engines such as hot-bulb engines, stationary engines and boat engines. It began with a few older fishing-boat engines that had been collected at the boatyard in Herrvik, and the question of where to store them arose.
Then the much larger diesel engine of the make Atlas Polar, which previously powered the power station in Visby, came along, and the need for an indoor hall became urgent. The engine was moved from Visby to Herrvik and became the museum's largest object. The association worked for several years to get it running again, and it was officially restarted for the public in summer 2026.
The museum is located at the northern harbour square in Herrvik harbour, next to the boatyard, the brackish water plant, Gute Fisk's facility and the Albatross Museum. Here steam engines, hot-bulb engines, diesel and petrol engines, stationary engines from power stations, saws and boilers (fyrar), as well as engines from fishing boats and several outboard motors are displayed. The association has also published a book about the museum and its collections, and a solar power installation on the museum roof has reduced electricity costs.
