About the museum
Arnäs hembygdsförening was founded in 1930 and has since 1938 had its homestead museum at Överön in Arnäsvall. The municipality made the plot available to the association, and in the same year Bryngegården was erected, a main farmhouse (mangårdsbyggnad) from the early 19th century that was bought in Sörbrynge village.
The second main building, known as Hembygdsgården, was previously called Vikegården and stood at Fornhemmet in Örnsköldsvik. It was moved in 1983 to the homestead area in Arnäs. Also there are a church stable (kyrkstall), Nätterlundsboden and a spirits storehouse (brännvinsbod) with a birch-bark roof (nävertak), as well as a stable and a bakehouse (bagarstuga).
The collections include a rich stock of winter conveyances, among them about twenty risslor (traditional sledges), and parts of a blue whale that was stranded in the area in the 17th century. The association also looks after Stybbersmarkskvarnen on its original site, which was donated in 1946, and is responsible for Arnäsleden, a hiking trail seven Swedish mil long between the villages of the parish.
