About the museum
Örnsköldsviks museum och konsthall is in the town’s old grammar school building on Läroverksgatan. The house was designed in Jugendstil-baroque (Jugendbarock, Art Nouveau) by the architect Albert Thurdin and built in 1904–1905 for the Samskola (co-educational school). It was later used by Örnsköldsvik’s technical school before being rebuilt for the museum’s needs in 1977–1978. The museum activities moved in in 1979.
The museum tells the history of Örnsköldsvik and the district through cultural heritage and art exhibitions, and in the storerooms there are extensive collections of historic and archaeological objects and photographs. In 2005 the Rådhusets konsthall (Town Hall Art Hall) moved into the same building, which now houses both the museum and the art hall.
Belonging to the museum is Bror Marklunds verkstad (Bror Marklund’s workshop), the sculptor’s preserved summer studio from Funäsdalen, with tools, sketches and plaster models, which was donated to the municipality. The museum also organizes creative activities, lectures and guided tours.
