About the museum
Ulvö museum opened in June 2015 on the old pilot station (lotsplats) in Ulvöhamn and is owned and run by the voluntary association Ulvö kapellag (Ulvö Chapel Association). The complex consists of a kokhus, a newly built sjöbod and a gistvall. The main exhibition tells the story of the fishing village Ulvöhamn's development from the 16th century to today: Baltic herring fishing, the salteries, surströmming, community life, the church, the school and the people.
Kokhuset is an older term for the fishing family's dwelling house. The house was moved to the museum site in 2014 and had previously served for just over 60 years as Ulvöns hembygdsgård (Ulvön homestead museum), opened in 1948. The sjöbod is built as a classic boathouse in Ulvöhamn, with a bodsvale (gallery), a bod (storeroom), a vedbod (woodshed) and a bodskulle (raised landing platform). On the bodskulle there are digital search stations with in-depth information on herring fishing, the salteries, community life and the nature of the Ulvön islands, as well as on the writer Lubbe Nordström's drängkammare (farmhand's room). The gistvall is a smaller replica of the drying frames for fishing nets that once dominated the fishing village.
The museum also arranges guided tours in the old Ulvö chapel (Ulvö gamla kapell) and in the Lotsstugan (pilots' cottage), which is owned by Ulvö kapellag, and by arrangement in Nya gruvan (New Mine) on Södra Ulvön. All rooms in the sjöbod and the kokhus have audio guides that are activated by QR codes.
