About the museum
Axmar bruk (ironworks village) was founded in 1671, at a time when Sweden was at war and iron exports were seen as a way to earn money. Claes Depken was the first ironmaster and ran the works for a few years. For just over 250 years the works were dominated by two families, Behm, with Järn-Brita at the head, and von Schinckel.
The ironworks reached its heyday in the latter part of the 19th century, when a new ironworks was built where the Hyttan stands today. The furnace building dates from 1861, and iron production there ceased in 1927. When charcoal-based ironworks became obsolete in the early 20th century, most of them were bought by forestry companies.
After decades of rest, the site was taken back by local enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. Today Axmar bruk is a cultural reserve and a visitor destination with cultural, nature and food experiences. In the Hyttan there are exhibitions, including an annual exhibition on part of the works' history, prepared together with the county museum (länsmuseet), and the building is also used for concerts, theatre and markets. Galleri Bläckhornet shows crafts by local artists and craftspeople.
