About the museum
F15 in Söderhamn was inaugurated in 1945 as a fighter wing and was part of the Swedish Air Force for more than fifty years. The first combat aircraft, the J 21, arrived in 1946. In the 1950s the Air Force's first jet aircraft followed, the J 28 Vampire and the J 29 Tunnan, and in the early 1960s the wing became an attack wing with the A 32 Lansen. In 1974 the AJ 37 Viggen arrived, the last combat aircraft of the unit. The wing also had helicopter operations, including the Hkp 4 from 1966 and the Hkp 10 Super Puma, and took part in the rescue operation after the Estonia disaster in 1994. Flying operations ended in 1997, and the wing was disbanded in 1998.
F15 Flygmuseum is run on a voluntary basis by F15 Kamratförening (F15 comrades' association), which was formed in 1970 on the initiative of the wing commander. The museum celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024 and is located in an old hangar on the former wing site, which today is called Flygstaden. Around 15,000 visitors come each year, most of them during the summer half-year.
In the aircraft hall the aircraft stand in chronological order, from the J 21 to the AJS 37 Viggen, together with training aircraft and an exhibition on helicopter operations. In smaller rooms the everyday life of the wing is shown, with, among other things, a reconstructed command centre, tradition rooms, barrack rooms and model making. Outdoors there is, among other things, a J 35 Draken.
