About the museum
The museum is housed in the former poorhouse at Stenhagsvägen 45, a house from the early 19th century that was a poorhouse and later an old people's home until 1931. After that it was a family dwelling rented out by the municipality until the mid-1950s, and then it became a store for the Allgon antenna factory. In the 1970s Österåkers hembygds- och fornminnesförening (Österåker local heritage and ancient monuments association) took over the neglected house and renovated it with its members' own efforts; the museum was inaugurated in 1984.
At about the same time the association took over the movable contents from the Åkerström siblings at the farm Lilla Västanberg, whose home had not changed in a hundred years. This made it possible to reconstruct a fully furnished Österåker home from the mid-19th century. The association shows environments from the farming culture of Österåker 100–150 years ago and also arranges theme exhibitions on the history of Österåker.
