About the museum
Åsele Hembygdsförening was founded as early as 1906 as Åsele folkbildnings- och hembygdsförening (Åsele adult education and local heritage association) and was reformed in 1986. The association looks after the object collection and, together with the municipality's culture committee (kulturnämnd), develops the local heritage area, which lies in the middle of the town with buildings, a stage and large green spaces.
The area comprises 17 buildings from different periods, with about 50 exhibitions in total and between 8,000 and 10,000 objects. The oldest is the portlidret from Gafsele, built in 1769. Sörnoretgården shows how a well-off large-farming family lived in the Lappmark region in the 1850s, while Torvsjögården reflects a considerably more meagre environment from around 1830. In the church cottages (kyrkstugorna), which originally stood in the church village and were moved here, textiles and clothing are shown, along with the folk dance group's memorial room, an exhibition on the history of the Sámi, models of Åsele's development and the postal museum, which opened in summer 2019.
In one of the houses Pallins tryckeri (Pallin's printing works) is also shown: a printing press from 1911 with printing blocks, letters and posters that was in use until the 1980s. The area also has a smithy, a bakehouse where flatbread (tunnbröd) is baked all year round, and a café in the summer half-year.
