About the museum
Råda local heritage society began its activities in 1938 on the initiative of director John Andersson of Mölnlycke Bil- och Omnibusaktiebolag, and was first called Råda Hembygdsvård. The heritage farm lies at Solsten in northern Mölnlycke by the old Borås road. The farm was built in 1849 by Elias Andersson and is the village’s only completely preserved farm. Many travellers stayed overnight there on their way to and from Gothenburg, and it was called “Eliases” and later “Strömboms”.
The society’s speciality is cooperage, a craft that was practised in the village of Benareby south-east of Mölnlycke. Today there is a cooperage workshop at the farm, where older members who still master the craft pass it on, including through courses. The tools in the cooperage come from farms in Benareby, which made barrels from the 19th century until 1960. The workshop is in a courtyard farmstead from the mid-19th century.
The society’s new museum was opened in November 2018. It shows exhibitions on the history of the district, and on the farm members are also building a model of Mölnlycke as it looked in 1935.
