About the museum
Kvarnbyns Handpappersbruk is a voluntary association that makes paper by hand using methods from the 17th and 18th centuries, mainly from cotton and linen rags (lump). The association was formed in 1996 as a historical reference to Kvarnbyn’s long history of papermaking. The first hand paper mill in Mölndals Kvarnby was established in 1653, and since then seven or eight mills have operated along the falls; the fine-paper mill Papyrus closed in 2006.
In the association’s premises, Stenladan, there is a workshop for paper, crafts and art, and a shop. Here the association tells and shows about plant fibres and handmade paper. The workshop is equipped with, among other things, beating engines (holländare), moulds and presses. Groups and schools that want to try making paper are welcome, and the association arranges courses, exhibitions in the gallery and cultural events.
