About the museum
Gunnebo slott (Gunnebo Castle) was built in 1784–1796 as a summer residence for the merchant John Hall and his wife Christina. The palace was meant to be larger, more beautiful and more modern than the other wealthy Gothenburg merchants' summer villas, and to show the family's success and wealth. Gothenburg's city architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg designed the main building, the other houses, the interior, the furniture and the gardens, which is why Gunnebo feels unusually cohesive. The drawings have been preserved and have formed the basis for the restorations carried out since the 1950s.
John Hall the Younger went bankrupt in 1807, and afterwards Gunnebo was owned by six different families. In 1949 Mölndal city bought the estate in order to preserve its high cultural values for posterity. Gunnebo is today one of Sweden's best-preserved 18th-century complexes.
The palace can only be visited on guided tours, which go through the state rooms on the main floor (paradvåningen) and the guest rooms on the upper floor. There are also guided tours of the orangery and the garden. The complex includes a symmetrical Baroque garden, an English park, organic kitchen gardens, a coffee house and an inn (krog), a shop and a farm with activities for children. The area is a cultural reserve of about 100 hectares.
