About the museum
Bingstasmedjan is one of the smithies in the village of Bingsta in Berg parish where the famous Bingsta guns (Bingstabössorna) were made during the 19th century and until 1920. In 1817 the first gunsmith, Per Mårtensson from Orsa Finnmark, settled in Bingsta, and the business was carried on by sons and grandsons over three generations. From Bingsta came guns of all kinds, from small songbird guns (fågelstudsare) to bear rifles and seal guns, and the smiths’ reputation spread far.
Berg local heritage society acquired the smithy with its fittings in 1952, and today it stands at the Bergheim heritage farm at the foot of Hoverberget. The equipment is preserved, and the inventory was carried out in cooperation with the Royal Armoury (Kungliga Livrustkammaren).
The heritage farm opened in 1937 and today has about twenty old buildings, most from the 18th and 19th centuries, moved here from the villages of the parish. The oldest is a barn from 1561, and the collections include tools for farm work and crafts such as carpentry, clock-making and iron-forging.
