About the museum
Bjersunds brickworks was founded in 1855, when Nils Classon at Önnerup 10 leased land closest to the Öresund to a brickmaster. Production began when the railway was built between Malmö and Lund and bricks were needed for the stations. In 1859 Anders Bengtsson bought the area, and in 1862 he sold it to Frans Henrik Kockum the Elder, founder of Kockums Gjuteri och Mekaniska Werkstad in Malmö.
Brick production in Bjärred continued until 1887, when Frans Henrik Kockum the Younger closed the business and had Bjärred's first summer villa built on the site. The brickworks' buildings were then used, among other things, for mushroom cultivation and apple storage, which is one reason they have survived.
Lomma Municipality bought the property at the beginning of the 1970s and decided that the area should be preserved as a museum. Hembygdsföreningen i Lomma kommun (Lomma local heritage association), formed in May 1979, has since looked after the museum. The preserved brick kiln is a periodic kiln with five four-hole sections.
