About the museum
The building was erected in 1831 as a parish house and school (sockenstuga och skola) and moved in 1882 to its present site in the church village of Askeryd. A shop was opened there that ran until 1969, and the post office was in the building from 1917 to 1965.
Today the building is a museum. The shop room is a general store that looks roughly as it did when it closed, with, among other things, old enamel signs and accessories for horse and cart. The post office has been preserved as it looked when it closed in 1965, with a sorting shelf, stamps and mailbags. There is also a reading room with local history books, family registers and photographs for anyone who wants to research their family.
The museum is owned and run by Askeryds hembygdsförening (Askeryd Local Heritage Society).
