About the museum

Eksjö museum grew out of a large donation of works and objects by the artist Albert Engström, which the pharmacist and collector Carl David Carlsson gave during the 1940s and 1960s. The museum opened in 1968 under the name Albert Engströmsmuseet and is run by Eksjö Municipality.

The museum lies by the Eksjöån river, on the site of an old tannery in the town’s preserved old town of wooden houses. The tannery was founded in 1831 by Leo Felix Aschan, and the brick building today dates from around 1900. The museum yard next door has been remodeled several times and has a herb garden with plants of cultural-historical interest.

Three permanent exhibitions are shown today: Albert Engström’s drawings and paintings, the history of the town from its founding in 1403, and the Småland Military History Museum, which shows the region’s war history and defence. The museum also has halls for contemporary art and temporary exhibitions, a museum shop, and Eksjö Tourist Center in the same building. It also manages Aschanska gården (the Aschan Farm), a preserved town house from around 1900.
