About the museum

Fornminnesgården is a local history museum in a 17th-century coppersmith's farm in the old town (Gamla stan) of Eksjö. The association behind the museum was formed in 1911 on the initiative of, among others, master carpenter Anders Kristell, and in 1912 it was given the name Eksjö och Vedbo Fornminnesförening (Eksjö and Vedbo Ancient Monuments Association). The collections were first kept in rented rooms, and in 1924 the association bought the so-called Sundholmska gården in the Kopparslagaren block, which was then given the name Fornminnesgården.

The farm has been registered since 1954 as a remarkable cultural-historical building and was transferred the same year to Eksjö town, while the association uses the property to look after the collections. In 1971 the association received a donation of bicycles and motorcycles from J A Karlsson's manufacture in Johanshem, which are shown in the old stable, the Cykelstallet (Bicycle Stable). Since 1990 there has also been a bookbinding workshop nearby.

The museum shows objects from the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, with an emphasis on crafts and small-scale industry in the urban environment, including a goldsmith's and silversmith's workshop, a shoemaker's, a bakery and the old smithy where coppersmiths, brass founders and ropemakers worked. Visitors can also see how the burghers of Eksjö lived, for example in an 18th-century kitchen, an 18th-century room and a 19th-century room. The association's photo collection extends from the late 1800s to the present day.
