About the museum
Ebbamåla bruk by the Mörrumsån river was started in 1886, when August and Johanna Sandberg founded Ebbemåla Gjuteri & Mekaniska Verkstad (Ebbemåla Foundry & Mechanical Workshop). The couple had spent a long time in America and had learned modern foundry techniques there. The site had water power from the river, and since 1874 the railway had passed Hovmansbygd, so raw materials and products could be transported by train. The factory made machines to its own patents, among them a machine for making wood wool (träull), and many of its products were sold abroad.
The works were extended with a hydroelectric plant, a pattern-making workshop, a foundry, a smithy, a mechanical workshop, storehouses and housing. The large foundry building was erected in 1901 and a new workshop in 1927, both in characteristic brick architecture. The power station from 1927 is still in use. The business was run by four generations of the Sandberg family and closed in 1967.
What remains is an almost complete industrial plant with buildings from the late 19th century to the 1920s and an almost complete collection of tools and machines. The works were renovated during the 1990s, named Årets industriminne (Industrial Heritage of the Year) in 1996, and designated a listed building the same year. Today the smithy, the mechanical workshop and the foundry are shown on guided tours, and the exhibition Made in Sweden is part of the visit.
