About the museum
Emåns Ekomuseum is run by a non-profit association formed in the early 1990s. Several areas of expertise come together in the work: Sandsjö hembygdsförening (Sandsjö local heritage society) with its collections, Bodafors Fiskevårdssällskap (Bodafors Fisheries Association), Bodafors Samhällsförening (Bodafors Community Association), Nässjö municipality and Jönköping County Museum.
The museum is housed in the former Boda mill, which has roots in the 17th century. In 1872 the nailsmith Axel Hägg bought the mill and began making roof shingles (takspån), and after a few years production switched to spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar). The company grew under the Zeinwoldt brothers and became AB Svenska Möbelfabrikerna, one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the Nordic countries, where architects such as Carl Malmsten and Axel Larsson worked. The smithy in the area was moved here from Strömsfors in 1919.
Water is the museum's common thread, and the Emån is counted as one of Europe's most species-rich river areas, with the status of a national river (nationalälv). The museum is currently undergoing renewal work; the exhibition is closed and a new basic exhibition is planned. The nature area with forest trails and a natural playground is open all year round.
