About the museum
Elfstrands krukmakeri is one of the few preserved pottery environments in Skåne and the first potters' environment in the province to be designated a listed building (byggnadsminne). Axel Andersson began working at a newly established pottery outside Sjöbo in 1888. About ten years later he bought it together with his wife Elna, and the business took the name Elfstrands. At that time about ten people worked here, with master potters, journeymen and apprentices.
The property consists of a workshop building and a dwelling with a journeymen's room and outbuildings. The large firing kiln can be seen from outside through a tall chimney. Inside the workshop, floors, kilns and work benches are worn by work, and together with ceramics, potter's wheels, tools and moulds the rooms come alive. In the dwelling a collection of yellow- and green-glazed ceramics is shown, including plates, vessels, mugs, hens and churches.
After the Second World War, demand for handmade ceramics fell, and the son Albert became the last potter; he worked now and then until his death in 1987. Sjöbo Municipality bought the farm in 1979 and manages it with its garden and buildings. After a clean-up of toxic substances in 2017, the municipality keeps the site open for visits and summer exhibitions.
