About the museum
Junkön is one of the largest islands in the Luleå archipelago and was first mentioned in writing in 1491. On the island there are a small number of permanent residents, a living commercial fishing trade and an archipelago museum that tells the story of life in the archipelago in former times.
The fishing hamlet was inaugurated in 1998 with a new quay and newly built fishing sheds (sjöbodar) in the old style. The archipelago museum lies in the village core by the guest harbour and shows old tools and other cultural objects. Right next to it is a boat engine museum with everything from old Penta engines to hot-bulb engines. During the summer, harbour and cabin hosts run a café in the archipelago museum.
On the island there is also a hattkvarn (hat mill, a type of windmill), which was probably built at the end of the 1700s. Large parts of Junkön are a firing range, with a ban on entry.
