About the museum
The glassworks at Fåglavik was founded in 1874, after the wholesaler A. M. Andersson from Gothenburg had been forced to spend the night at Fåglavik when his train got stuck in a snowstorm. He looked for a site for a glassworks and found that the peat bog around Fåglavik was suitable. The works operated until 1980, and the first glassblower was Andreas Lyrén. In its heyday it was one of the biggest tourist destinations in western Sweden, where several coaches a day could come to watch the production and buy glass in the factory shop.
The last building on the works site was demolished in 2007. At Fåglavik today there is a memorial site with a glassblower statue, a rest area and an information board with pictures and stories. The museum is housed in Herrljunga cultural centre and has an artistic character. In it a glassworks workshop has been set up with tools and materials saved from the old works. The exhibition includes the first and the last glass made at Fåglavik, together with plenty of photographs from the years of the works.
