About the museum

Huttla kvarn, colloquially known as the name of Dampetorp's mill and saw, is located by the Afsån river in Naum outside Vara. The exact date of the mill's construction is unclear, but at the beginning of the 19th century it was a mill for the noble estate (frälsegården) Dampetorp. The land was later divided among three farms, which jointly ran the mill. The building burned down in the 1860s but was rebuilt in roughly the same way, and somewhat later the mill was expanded with a second pair of millstones.

The mill has two floors, with stone walls on the lower part and boards on the upper part, and the roof is made of wood shingles. The power came from a wooden water wheel, which in 1906 and 1914 was replaced by turbines for the two pairs of stones. The stones are hand-hewn and come from Lugnås, and in the early 20th century a sieve was installed so that the mill could supply flour for bread.

The sawmill is first mentioned in purchase documents in 1876 but is probably older. It has a single-blade frame saw driven by a wooden undershot water wheel and worked until the mid-20th century. Since the 1950s Naums hembygdsförening (Naum Local Heritage Society) has taken care of the facility and continuously restores it.
