About the museum

The Herrljunga district local heritage society (Herrljungatraktens Hembygdsförening) was formed in March 1942 and used the old school building by Haraberget as its local history museum. The area was leased to the society by the parish in 1945, and in 1947 Håkansgårdsstugan was moved here as the society’s first museum building. Today the heritage park consists of fifteen buildings, most of them relocated cottages from the 18th and 19th centuries. The school building is the only building that still stands on its original site. The park is one of the county’s largest open-air museums and has been a municipally protected cultural environment area since 1995. The society states that it stores about 6,000 objects.

The carriage museum originates from an idea by the district doctor Lennart Kjellson, who in the 1960s saw abandoned horse-drawn carriages falling into ruin. The Lions Club rescued some of them, and in 1975 the collection was donated to the local heritage society. After a workshop was built in 1991 the carriages were restored, and in 1995 the museum was inaugurated by the then Minister for Agriculture. Of the about twenty carriages, several are very finely prepared, from simple family carriages to the gentleman’s carriage Mylord from 1890. On the upper floor an exhibition on the farmer’s seasons is shown.

In the park there is also a railway station building, a transformer, a herb garden, a rebuilt cist grave (hällkista), an apple grove with Västergötland varieties, the beekeepers’ observation hive and a play cottage. The Trollstigen (Troll Path) with its activity track attracts children, and in December a Christmas market with Christmas-decorated cottages is held.
