About the museum
Filipstads Bergslags hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1922 and is the third oldest local heritage society in Värmland. The society owns and manages several buildings and collections at Munkeberg, where the lake Lersjön flows into the Schillerälven river in northern Filipstad. The homestead museum lies on the river's eastern side, and Storbrohyttan on the western side.
The centre of the homestead museum is Bergsmansgården, an old farm from Asphyttan that the society received in 1945. It was dismantled, moved to Munkeberg on land made available by the town and rebuilt, and it was inaugurated on Midsummer Eve 1949, when it was fully furnished with objects from houses in and around Filipstad. The farm dates from the 1700s. The ground floor has a miner's home, and the upper floor shows how better-off people lived, including with the cradle of the inventor John Ericsson.
The site also has the Tullhuset with café and crafts, the Logen, built in 1999 and used for parties and events, as well as camping and a bathing place. The society organises, among other things, Valborg celebrations, Midsummer celebrations and Iron Day (Järnets dag) at Storbrohyttan.
