About the museum
On the site where the mill building now stands, a bar iron hammer (stångjärnshammare) was set up in the early 1600s, a few years before Filipstad was founded in 1611. In 1654 the town built its first proper town mill here. After a fire in 1694 and several rebuilds, the present stone building was erected in 1807, and the mill ground flour, most recently for Wasabröd, until the 1940s. Thereafter the house was used as a grain store and warehouse.
Today the building is a museum. Ferlinmuseet was inaugurated on 12 March 2005 and came about through cooperation between Kulturföreningen Kulörta Lyktor (cultural association) and the then Ferlingruppen (Ferlin Group) in Filipstad. Across the whole upper floor, settings, pictures and texts tell of Nils Ferlin, from his upbringing in Filipstad through the bohemian years in Klarakvarteren in Stockholm, where Café Cosmopolite symbolises his regular haunt, to his last years in Roslagen outside Norrtälje. The museum also shows a slideshow and Ferlin's own readings.
On the ground floor there is a gallery with exhibitions by local and national artists, and one of the millstones still stands there as a reminder of the mill days.
