About the museum
Storbrohyttan lies at the southern end of Lersjön in northern Filipstad. The works was originally called Carlsbrohyttan but has been known as Storbro since the 17th century. Pig iron was produced there: in 1624 about 27 tonnes, and between 1737 and 1756 about 2,000 tonnes. During the 1910s production reached about 2,600 tonnes per year.
The works changed owners several times. After Lesjöfors AB had owned it from 1917 to 1920, the furnace was blown out in 1920. The plant was then renovated in the 1920s, and in the 1950s the dilapidated works building was repaired with the help of grants. The Stiftelsen Storbro Hytta (Storbro Works Foundation) was formed by Filipstad town and the company to preserve the works.
Today Storbrohyttan is owned by Filipstads Bergslags hembygdsförening and managed by the association Värmländska Industriminnen (Värmland Industrial Heritage). The works is counted as one of the county's listed buildings. The association gladly guides visitors around the works on request.
