About the museum

Nordmarks hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1938 and runs Nordmarks gruv- och mineralmuseum (Nordmark Mining and Mineral Museum), about 15 km north of Filipstad. The site lies at Garvartorpet at the end of Hembygdsvägen, near the vicarage (prästgården), and comprises twelve buildings on an area of around 700 square metres.

The museum shows collections of tools and machines used in the district's mines, together with maps, photographs and models. One of the models, about ten square metres in size, shows how the mining installations at Nordmark looked in the 1920s. Nordmark is one of Sweden's most mineral-rich areas, and a special mineral museum shows minerals from the district.

On the grounds there is also a rifle forge from the 1700s, an ironworks manager's residence in the form of a parstuga (double cottage) from the 1700s, and a sod hut (jordkoja) from the 1800s. Café Gruvan and a meeting room are located on the site, and the café is open whenever the museum is open.
