About the museum
Ångrike Fryksdalen is located in Oleby just outside Torsby, on the shore of Lake Fryken. The site was formerly the Oleby steam sawmill, built in 1890 by farmer and merchant Jan Persson. The sawmill was run by the family for several generations until 1965, after which Torsby municipality bought the land. The sawmill building, machine house and chimney were demolished and levelled.
The non-profit association Ångrike Fryksdalen was founded in 1997 to build up an experience centre with steam-powered machines that bring to life the industrial and transport history of Fryksdalen. Torsby municipality transferred the plot to the association the same year as a start-up grant, and the area has since been transformed from an abandoned building site into today's facility.
At the heart of the facility is a complete steam sawmill driven by a steam engine built in Jönköping in 1901, which previously drove Fridhems steam sawmill until 1978. By the lake there is also a steamboat pier, a tugboat, a narrow-gauge industrial railway and a timber measuring museum. The site aims to show the importance of the timber industry and the role of steam power in industrial development. A hostel is part of the operations.
