About the museum
Försvarsmuseum Boden (Boden Defence Museum) is a defence history museum focusing on Upper Norrland. It was inaugurated in 2006 and is run by Boden Municipality. The exhibition premises of about 2,500 square metres are in the disused gymnasium of the former Boden Artillery Regiment and in a barracks building, linked by a glazed entrance building.
The basic exhibition Norrlands lås (Norrland's Lock) follows Swedish defence history from the late 1800s to the present day, starting from the Riksdag's decision in 1900 to build Boden Fortress. The exhibition runs from the mobilisation during the First World War through the interwar years, the Second World War and the Cold War to today's peacekeeping missions. Visitors travel through time along a timeline.
The museum has three further exhibitions: one on garrison life, one on Boden radio and Sweden's first radio broadcast, and Operation Draken, a VR experience. The same premises house Bodens konsthall (Boden Art Hall), a café and a museum shop.
