About the museum

Rödbergsfortet was built in 1903–1908 as part of Boden Fortress. The Riksdag decided on the fortress in 1900 and construction began the following year. Together with four other rock-reinforced forts around Boden, it was to defend Upper Norrland.

For almost a hundred years the fort was one of the country's most secret places. It was the last active fort in Boden and was taken out of service on 1 January 1998. Since 2000 it has been open to visitors. Originally the fort was equipped with guns of 15, 8 and 6 centimetres calibre; in the 1970s the howitzers were replaced by 12-centimetre guns.

Today visitors follow a guide from the former canteen (marketenteri) into the fort trench (fortgraven) and deep into the rock, and then up to the top. The interiors and equipment remain and show how the fort was used in everyday life and how it was meant to function in combat. The fort was a small community in which the crew could manage for a long time without contact with the outside world.
