About the museum
The school museum in Svartbäcken is housed in the oldest schoolhouse of Österhaninge parish. The school was completed in 1846, held its first lesson on 15 February 1847 and was in use for 85 years, until 1932. The former school director Olle Flodby, head teacher in Österhaninge and Haninge from 1957 to 1987, worked with great energy to set up a museum in the old schoolhouse.
The schoolroom was opened as a museum on 15 February 1997, and the teacher's residence in 1999. The museum shows a unique setting that is furnished mainly in the style of the early 20th century, with school desks, books, wall charts in a chart stand and other fittings.
Haninge Municipality owns the property, and Haninge Local Heritage Guild (Haninge hembygdsgille) is responsible for the fittings and the activities. Guides from the guild keep the museum open, talk to visitors as they arrive and, at around 14:00, give a little extra talk about the school's history and what it was like to be a child in the past. Each month there is also a special theme, such as a short lecture or an activity.
