Tingshuset i Västerhaninge

About the museum

The courthouse in Västerhaninge was built in 1733–1734, and an extra storey, the courtroom, was added in 1817. Until 1938 it was owned by the parties obliged to build courthouses in Sotholm Hundred (Sotholms härad), after which it was owned by the Sotholms härads local heritage society in Nynäshamn. In 1970 the building was transferred to Västerhaninge Municipality. The courtroom on the upper floor survives, and the last court session was held in 1916.

When Haninge Local Heritage Guild was formed in 1944, it was given the task of setting up a local history museum in part of the building, and in 1988 the guild was granted the right to use the entire property. The building is now used for the guild's meetings and activities. The smaller rooms contain offices, collections and a small library, and the tavern room (krogsalen) on the ground floor can be rented for gatherings.

On the courthouse grounds also stand the crofter's cottage Janstorp, moved from Nynäsvägen south of Handen centre; Erikslunds lillstuga, which previously stood west of Svartbäcken; and the Sotingesmedjan (smithy) from Sotinge gård. Visits take place by arrangement with the guild.

Up to 50 guests.

The tavern room on the ground floor can be hired on every day of the week, 07:00–21:00, for, among other things, christenings, funeral coffees, association meetings and lectures. Equipment for laying tables for up to 50 people and a simple kitchen with stove and dishwasher are available. Barbecuing in the garden is not permitted.
