About the museum
Gammelgården in Myckelgensjö is one of the country's best-preserved farms on its original site. As early as the late 16th century four tax-farms (skattehemman) in the village are mentioned, one of them at Gammelgården, and the farm appears on a map from 1695. The placement of the buildings on the map of 1866 was largely the same as today.
The farm was worked into the 1930s by the smallholder (hemmansägare) Einar Genberg. The county museum (Länsmuseet) bought the farm in 1940, and for some years it was restored through the Swedish National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet), which also placed a group of conscientious objectors here. The County Administrative Board declared the farm a listed building in 1997.
The farm consists of over 25 log houses with various functions, including a main building originating from the late 18th century, whose interior has been restored to its oldest known appearance. Many utility buildings give the farm an old-fashioned character and reflect Norrland farming in the era of self-sufficiency. The farm also includes boathouses and barns closer to the lake. The village association runs a summer café in the födorådsstugan (provisions cottage).
